The Importance of Booster Doses for Private Duty Nurses and their Patients

Vaccinations are essential to protecting not only yourself, but also your patients. As Omicron cases reach an all-time high, it is now more vital than ever for healthcare workers to receive a booster dose as soon as they become eligible.

Recent studies show that Pfizer’s boosters provide roughly 75% protection against symptomatic Omicron infections.

The following are some reasons why getting a booster dose is extremely important to an already over-exhausted healthcare system:

  • Immunity, even after being vaccinated, does wane over time. Boosters ensure long-lasting protection against waning immunity.
  • People who are boosted and have breakthrough infections have shorter periods of being infectious which can protect the risk of transmitting the virus to your vulnerable patients.
  • The booster can lessen the severity of your symptoms if you contract Omicron.
  • People who have received their boosters are 47.5 times less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than people who haven’t been vaccinated at all; seven times less likely to become infected with COVID-19 than those who have not received any vaccinations; and four times less likely to become infected with COVID-19 than people who have received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Eligibility for a Pfizer booster:

  • It’s been at least 5 months since completing a primaries series
  • You are 12 years of age or older
  • You can receive a Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J booster (only Pfizer can be used as a booster for those ages 12-17)

Eligibility for a Moderna Booster:

  • It’s been at least 5 months since completing a primary series
  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You can receive a Moderna, Pfizer, or J&J booster

Eligibility for a Johnson & Johnson Booster:

  • It’s been at least 2 months since completing a primary vaccination
  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You can receive a J&J, Pfizer, or Moderna booster
